From The Hiding Place

Yesterday afternoon I found myself at my parents with a quiet house. Everyone was either asleep or out with mom on errands. I couldn't be more thankful that the internet was down for the moment! I put on some water for tea and went wandering about looking for a book. A good supply can be found on any of the three floors but I found myself up in my old bedroom, crawling back to the bookshelf. There was a time when I could stand in the room but that time passed years ago. So many good books, most of which i'd already read at some point, but I settled on The Hiding Place. It's a beautiful story and I could go on and on about it but today I just wanted to share a brief exchange that Corrie had with her father when she was six years old. Though i've read the book, I never took notice of this particular exchange before.

"Father what is sexsin?"
He turned to look at me, as he always did when answering a question, but to my surprise he said nothing. At last he stood up, lifted his traveling case from the rack over our heads and set it on the floor.
"Will you carry it off the train, Corrie? he said.
I stood up and tugged at it. It was crammed with the watches and spare parts he had purchased that morning.
"It's too heavy," I said.
"Yes," he said. " and it would be a pretty poor father who would ask his little girl to carry such a load. It's the same way, Corrie, with knowledge. Some knowledge is too heavy for children. When you are older and stronger you can bear it. For now you must trust me to carry it for you."
And I was satisfied.

I am still in awe of the grace of this man's response!
It is my prayer that Rhodric and I would love our little girls so well as they grow.
Is it too much to hope that carrying certain burdens for them is possible in this modern world where people, media and technology will be happily handing out answers to them? Maybe not impossible, but difficult no doubt! Praying for wisdom in knowing how to shelter and prepare them for hard truths of a fallen world. So thankful for Jesus and the hope he offers!
